49  Classifieds / Wanted / D44 front axle on: June 05, 2009, 11:36:56 AM
does anyone have a D44 front axle w/ a drivers side drop from a jeep?  I know someone that's looking for one.  Not sure it has to be a jeep axle, but it's going on a toyota so I think a D44 from a full size will be way too wide.
thanks.

no argument there. I've been through about 4 birfields myself already...

you got it backwards. you should sell the jeep and keep the toyota.

finally got it done!  what I thought was going to be a simple job turned into a PITA.  My track bar totally screwed the mounting of the ram, so I had to put it below the tierod instead of behind it.  now I need to build some kind of guard around it so it doesn't get smashed.  The steering pretty much feels the same on the road, which is good.  I'm looking forward to trying it out off road.

Welcome! cool rig.  maybe we'll see you at one of our club meetings?

Anytime you are looking for someone to wheel with (as long as it's legal) feel free to post the info here and see if anyone is interested.  Also, you are welcome to join us anytime we go to places that are open to the public, such as Whispering Pines or Rausch Creek.

so what you have for a drivetrain in that bad-boy?

#1 doesnt work if she has the checkbook and pays the credit card bill
#2 works well - it's how I bought the trailer and roll cage.  she can't argue with safety, unless you are worth more to her dead.
#3 is never an option. clearly josh has not been married long enough.

Another option is to not take "no" for an answer. Keep asking until you wear her down and she says "yes".  Thats a little trick I learned from my 5 year old.

do you know if Hans still plans to go?  I'm sure Pat wouldn't mind trailering there and back with him instead of driving the jeep

where i need to tap is still relatively thin, so was thinking of cementing the fittings in with some JB weld for extra strength.  But if I order steel fittings, could I weld them in place? or would that just make the cast housing weaker than it already is?  if I was to weld steel to cast, what would be the best type of welding to use?  There's no way I could be precise enough with the stick welder I have.  Everytime I've tried to weld cast before i haven't had good luck, and thats even with pre-heating and then wrapping in insulation so it cools slow.

object?  as long as you're the tail gunner, who cares?  and if this really is the last ride then you can't ask for a better excuse to beat on it that much harder!

Pat,  I'll probably drive down after work Friday and camp out friday and sat.  what's everyone else doing?

60  Technical / Mechanical / Re: hydro assist - tapping the suzuki steering box on: March 15, 2009, 06:08:15 AM
thanks. i would have done a 1.25" cylinder, but I couldn't find one online anywhere.  The picture shows where I tapped the geo / suzuki steering box.  This was my test housing. unfortunately I cant use this one due to the third hole that I f-d up on top. Not too many people use this steering box on SAS'd tracker, so I couldn't find any pictures online for inspiration.  Everyone seems to upgrade to toyota box at the same time.  I tried to tap on top where you would for a toyota, but the metal is just too thin.
