Has anybody got a good suggestion for a transmission upgrade,  4 or 5 speed, for a 1979 CJ5 with a 6 cyl.

Thanks

As with anything, it depends on what you want do with the vehicle.  There are many perfectly fine stock transmissions that work well and should require little to no modification.  I think the best one that would be a drop in for the CJ5 would be a T176 4 speed transmission.  I had a T4 (4 speed) in my CJ7 but i blew out the reverse gear.  T5's (5 speed) seem to be weaker yet.  They are both fully aluminum cases.  If you want a transmission with a low first gear a T98 was stock but hard to find.  You can install a T18 with an adaptor (<$400) and have the low first gear and shortest adaptor length for that vehicle.  There is a ton of information on the web about the various transmission swaps.
