hi, i am looking to replace the tires on my ranger(on stock 16x7 rims) and i have some questions on sizing.  the initial size i was thinking was 235/85 16(31.7x9.3+/-)  but the common 31in size is 265/75 16 (31.6x10.4 +/-).  the question i have is would that inch in width make a noticeable difference off road? or should i just go for the cheaper size?

I would just go for the cheaper size.  My truck came stock with 265/75-16s and i went to 285/75-16s when the tires had to be replaced.  All I noticed from increasing width was a change in handeling characteristics and a drop in fuel milage.  The tread pattern of the tire is going to affect the offroad performance more than 1" of width would.
